Bird Flu Alert - Surveillance system should be put in place

There are reports of Bird Flu outbreak in Kamrup district of Assam and some neighbouring districts of Bangladesh. Field officers of Animal Husbandry and Livestock staff, officials, Panchayats, SDOs, BDOs and BLDOs must start keeping vigil on unusual mortality of poultry birds in any parts of the district and must inform nearest Veterinary Officer. All readers residing in Nadia to please note that early detection and sample collection of dead birds can only prevent massive culling operations in a large area. Standing instructions are - start culling in the area within 3 kms radius where deaths of poultry birds is unusually high and examination of dead bird by VO/ VS does not confirm any known disease.

We don't want this photographs to be repeated in Nadia this year.

I still remember the horrified memory of Bird culling in Ranaghat in the last year just before Panchayat Election. At that point of time withiut any delay in Ranaghat we have sensitised the Civial cefence volunteers and started the culling operation rethlessly in and around 5 Km radious of Baidyapur G.P.the greatest impediment we faced was the preparation of authentic map showing the affected mouzas in proper scale. And I must mention that the Land department took much time to rise in the occassion, specialy there was no preparedness in respect of the supply of required maps .As a result we had to rectify our notification at Ranaghat once ,which caused lot of embarrasment to us.Hope this year god forbid if there is any recurrence of avian influenza we will be able to fight out in a well planned manner- DPLO

I fully agree with you. We can use GIS maps to be prepared by NRDMS to get accurate and quick maps showing 3 kms or 5 kms radius.
